The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has promised a new system of regional financing with a Government of the Generalitat chaired by the winner of the Catalan elections, the socialist Salvador Illa. At the closing of the Cercle d’Economia conference, Sánchez stressed that “all roads pass through Salvador Illa”, reaffirming that it is the leader of the PSC who must form a government as the winner of the elections in Catalonia in both votes and seats. .
Along these lines, Sánchez has indicated that Spanish politics, the interests of his Government, are not going to condition the negotiations to block Illa’s presidency in the Generalitat. “The Government of Catalonia will decide in Catalonia and will obey only the needs and interests of Catalonia,” he stated. Along these lines, he added that he will maintain the transfers negotiated with President Aragonès and the forgiveness of the promised debt. After praising the good harmony achieved with the ERC Government and President Pere Aragonès, Sánchez stressed that he will redouble investment in strategic infrastructure for Catalonia, such as the Mediterranean corridor and Rodalies. Also, that he will respect Catalan history, language and culture.
Regarding Spanish politics, the president has been very critical of the main opposition party, which he has accused of carrying out “an asymmetric polarization, in which some insult and others are insulted.” He has also criticized the words yesterday in this same forum of the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, in which he suggested that he could agree with Giorgia Meloni’s party in Europe. Sánchez considered these words “very serious” and stressed that “I am not going to sit down with Vox.”
