With the NBA trade deadline in the rear-view mirror, the Knicks must start looking ahead to the NBA Draft in June and free agency in July.
Outside of figuring out what to do with Carmelo Anthony, team president Phil Jackson must find a lead guard to pair with big man Kristaps Porzingis.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN, New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday could be that player when free agency arrives.
One player to keep an eye on? New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday. League sources familiar with the matter say that some in the Knicks organization view Holiday as a target in free agency this summer. Team president Phil Jackson expressed interest in trading for Holiday earlier in his tenure, so the Knicks’ current interest in him makes sense. Holiday will likely have plenty of suitors, though.
One of those other suitors could be Holiday’s former team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
Holiday, 26, is averaging 15.9 points and 7.4 assists for New Orleans this season. Since entering the league in 2009, the former first-round pick has averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists per game. Advanced stats paint Holiday as an above-average player on both offense and defense–something the Knicks desperately need from their lead guards.
Hornacek on hot seat?
If the Pelicans choose to attempt to re-sign Holiday, they can offer (by NBA rules) more to him than any other team. It could take a max contract to land Holiday this summer.
