An inmate at the Sumter County federal prison serving time for mailing a threatening letter to Vice President Joe Biden was sentenced again for mailing a threatening letter from prison to President Barack Obama, according to the U.S. State Attorney’s Office.
Kurt Michael Adams, 29, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for mailing a threatening letter to the president July 20, 2016, spokesman William Daniels said Wednesday.
Adams mailed a letter from the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, the largest federal prison in the country, to the White House that contained numerous threats to kill the president and other federal employees. The envelope contained “a harmless white powder that he identified as a ‘chemical agent,’” Daniels said.
“When confronted by agents, Adams admitted that he had sent the letter and that he had ‘meant every word,’” he said.
Daniels also announced that another Coleman prisoner, Todd Shepard, 49, was sentenced Wednesday to an additional 15 years in federal prison for ambushing and stabbing two federal corrections officers in 2015.
His prior sentence at Coleman runs until 2029 on a federal drug-distribution conviction. He also has a separate life sentence for the 2008 murder of a Missouri law-enforcement officer, Daniels said.
On the evening of Sept. 18, 2015, Shepard ambushed and stabbed two federal correctional officers with a sharpened piece of metal, Daniels said.
Shepard later said he attacked the officers to draw attention to a recent loss of prisoner recreation time, Daniels said. Before he was subdued, he shouted repeated threats about killing the officers, Daniels said.
