It is the world’s first and the world’s largest – and now it occupies 30 years.

While the Icehotel is built from the bottom up every fall, because the previous one is melted away in the summer and during out into the river Torne, so it may still celebrate the 30 years birthday of this year. It was in 1989, to an enthusiastic swede got the idea to create buildings out of ice in the town of Jukkasjärvi in northern sweden.

Yngve Bergqvist wanted to be able to visit his yndlingsdestination in the winter, therefore he went and made plans for what you could do, to vinterlandet was interesting.

Inspired by japanese traditions of ice sculptures and with the help of two professional isskulptører he invited some artists for a workshop in Jukkasjärvi in 1989.

This kick-started the 30 years long journey and the birth of the world’s first ice hotel. Today, there are ishoteller in many parts of the world, as it turned out to be a very popular attraction.

First built the people behind a hall, which received much attention around the world. There were exhibited art, and a variety of events attracted many people to the small town. A team of guests asked one day whether they could be allowed to stay overnight in the hall. When they awoke, they told that they had had a great night in the fresh and icy air. On the way was the idea for the ice hotel was born.

Each year, invite the ice hotel different artists to Jukkasjärvi, where the artists each designing a suite at the hotel. The hotel also has a permanent part, which, by means of electricity is kept cold throughout the year. In the course of the year to visit the 70,000 tourists to the hotel.

The 15 unique suites, which are built anew each year, can be booked for around 5000 Danish kroner per night.
