Just like the new generation takes over the old generation, once popular games eventually lose their popularity and fade away slowly only to be succeeded by newer games. The older games do not cease to exist, they still do but just don’t remain as popular as they used to be.
Fortnite which has been at the helm of Battle Royale games for quite some time now was also one of the most popular games in the multiplayer genre. With professional gamers moving on to Fortnite from several extremely popular games such as Counterstrike: Global Offensive and the Call of Duty franchise, the game rose in popularity.
Another reason for Fortnite’s success was that the game is FTP or free-to-play. With the advent of Valorant which is a 5v5 FTP multiplayer game, and more and more professional eSports players switching to it, people have been wondering if Valorant will soon take over Fortnite to become the most popular multiplayer game.
Ever since Valorant was released, the online gaming community cannot get enough of the 5v5 FPS tactical shooter and cannot stop comparing it to other games. And many have even deemed it to be the ‘next game killer’. But is it true? Will Valorant actually kill Fortnite and it’s popularity? Let us look at the Fortnite vs Valorant debate and clear if Fortnite is actually getting hurt by Valorant or not once and for all.
All credits to Valorant for the way it was able to attract so much attention with just it’s closed beta and actually drawing the crowd away from Battle Royale games for a while, it is in no way set up to dethrone Fortnite in the future. And the very comparison between the two games is absurd and boorish.
This is because the games are different and unique from each other in every way but the kind of animation they use. The characters are bright and colourful and so is the game UI but apart from that there is very little to compare between the two games. While Fortnite focuses on Attack as well as Defence allowing the players to take their time to plan their strategies, Valorant calls for prompt actions leaving the players with very less time to actually strategize their course.
In the eSports space Fortnite has allowed players from across the world to showcase their skill set and this has happened for the first time in the world of gaming. Never before has there been a game which has had such a tournament structure with such high payouts. Plus Fortnite’s storyline-based concept makes it possible for the franchise to explore numerous content for its future.
Valorant’s hard to master peek, aim and game sense requires a lot of time to master. It just seems like a game which requires a lot of investment from the players unlike Fortnite which is relatively easier on rookies.
Also, it is too soon to say if Valorant is here to stay. Sure it has elements which could make it the next hot thing in the gaming industry but we can never tell. Similar splashy entrances were made by Apex Legends and Overwatch but we all know what happened to those games. Will Valorant ever dethrone Fortnite? The answer is clear and that answer is no. But will Valorant become the next hot thing in PvP tactical shooter? Only time will tell.
