The Table of Congress has awarded the “Josefina Carabias” Parliamentary Journalism Prize to the journalist and political chronicler of La Vanguardia Carmen del Riego. This is the fourth edition in which the prize has been awarded, which aims to help strengthen the image of the Chamber and its members, as well as to promote the defense of the values ??of rights and freedoms that parliamentarians themselves represent and defend in his political action from Parliament.

This recognition, which is being awarded this year in its fourth edition, was conceived as a tribute to the figure of Josefina Carabias, the first woman to dedicate herself exclusively to journalism and who, due to her good work in parliamentary reporting, was In addition, she has been a pioneer in this profession, paving the way for many other women.

The award was created in 2018 and is held annually to coincide with Women’s Day. The first recognized journalist was Lucía Méndez, and in the second edition the jury agreed to award it to Anabel Díez and awarded posthumous recognition to the journalist Montserrat Oliva, while in the third edition Fernando Garea was awarded.

In granting this recognition, their work in favor of democracy and informative plurality is taken into account. The prize is awarded by the Congress Bureau, at the proposal of a jury made up of the president of the Congress, four members of the Bureau, the director of communication of the Congress and the president of the Association of Parliamentary Journalists.

Carmen del Riego was born in Oviedo (Asturias) in 1960. She has a degree in Journalism, Law and Political Science and Administration. She began her professional career in the newspaper La Nueva España, in Oviedo, and after finishing her degree, she joined, as the first woman, the newsroom of the Europa Press agency, where she began doing local and Senate information, until in 1986 she joined to the Politics and Parliament section, which he does to this day, and has done so in media such as Diario16, El Sol, and since 1992 in the newspaper La Vanguardia.

Carmen del Riego is in possession of the Luis Carandell Parliamentary Journalism Prize, awarded by the Senate, and the Defense Journalism Prize, awarded by the Ministry of Defense, an award that joins the one awarded today by Congress.
