In remarks made at a July 4th BBQ with military families at White House, President Biden stated that the U.S. will persevere in “unsettling” times.
“The economy is expanding, but not without pain. He said that Liberty is being attacked, both at home and abroad. “In recent times, there have been reasons to believe that this country is moving in the opposite direction, that freedom has been diminished, and that rights that we thought were protected are no more.”
This holiday is just over a week following Roe v. Wade’s reversal by the U.S. Supreme Court. It overturned the constitutional right of abortion that had been upheld nearly a century ago.
Biden stated, “It can be exhausting. It can also be unsettling.” “But tonight, let me assure you that we will get through this.”
He stated that the United States was always a “work in progress”.
The president stated that “after we’ve made giant steps forward, it’s been a few steps backwards.” After laying the foundation for a better tomorrow, the worst parts of our past have reached out to us and pulled us back.
Biden stated that he is optimistic about the country’s future and insists that Americans are more united than they are divided.
Biden faces a country that isn’t so optimistic right now. According to an AP/NORC poll, 85% of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. The president’s approval rating is near his lowest point in office, with 40% of voters approving Biden’s job performance, in spite of the Democratic Party winning favor in the same poll.
Biden stated in his July 4th remarks that “we’ve been tested before,” just like we are today. “But we’ve never failed because we have never left the core beliefs that make up this nation.”
Bide also spoke out about “principled Patriotism”, saying that “No one, no party, and no interest can preside over the American Project.”
These remarks were made in reference to the attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob with the intent of preventing Congress from certifying results of the 2020 presidential election.
The House Committee investigating the events leading to the attack continues to hold televised hearings.
Biden urged all Americans to pledge to make America “forever a place that is not marked by the thirst for power at every cost, but by a covenant to trust, hope and promise.”
