HIGHLAND PARK (Ill.) — Vice President Kamala Harris will make an unexpected visit to a suburb of Chicago Tuesday evening, just days after a mass shooting devastated the area.

Harris was heading towards Highland Park shortly after Robert Crimo III was charged with first-degree murder. Crimo III was accused of killing seven and injuring many more during a Fourth of July parade.

Harris will speak in the area where Crimo is alleged to have shot randomly into the crowd.

Nancy Rotering (the mayor of Highland Park) invited the vice-president to visit the town Tuesday morning. Harris will be joined by Brad Schneider, a Democratic Representative from Illinois, as well as Julie Morrison, a State Senator.

Harris made remarks at the National Education Association annual meeting where Harris addressed the Highland Park tragedy.

She said that Congress must ban assault weapons. An assault weapon is intended to quickly kill many human beings. It is not necessary that there are weapons of war in the streets of America. We need gun safety laws that are reasonable.

Last week, President Joe Biden signed landmark bipartisan gun legislation into law. However, he said that more action was necessary.
