Natalie Lorentz was just sitting down with her family to view the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois when the shooting began. Lorentz was there with her husband, three boys and mother. She said that the shooting sound like “rapid fire.”

“We sat down as fast as possible, and my husband saw the shooter. He was shocked and said, ‘There’s one.’ Lorentz explained to CBS News that they then got up and ran. “I grabbed my youngest son. My husband had my two other children. My mom ran with us. She fell and was separated from us.”

Andrea Lorentz, Lorentz’s mom, stated that Lorentz fell next to a person who had been shot.

She said that the man next to her looked like he had been shot and that the woman in front of them was covered in blood. “When I saw this, I was like, You just need to get out of here!’

Lorentz was soon reunited to her mother. She stated that her instinct was protect her children from any bloodshed.

She said, “People who had been shot, that they were trying to shield them so they didn’t see, were being taken to an ambulance and they just kept walking, trying not to get away from them.”

Lorentz said that it was the most difficult moment in her life. Two parents who were just inches from Lorentz’s family died in the shooting, she believes.

She said, “I feel like my shock is still on.” “I feel like my panic mode is still on. This is all I can think of. What is the secret to our survival? How did we survive?

She is now worried about the future for her family.

She said, “It used be a rare occurrence, but now it isn’t.” This is commonplace. This is an accepted fact of life. This is the world we live in now and this is what we want for our children.
