The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has denied this week that the suspension of Laura Borràs as president of the Parliament after the opening of an oral trial for her legal case for corruption affects in some way the future of the Government that makes up ERC and JxCat.

“I have no information from any member of the Government who believes that it is not necessary to continue working with the same confidence. What the country needs is a stable Government that can continue working,” Aragonès said in statements from the headquarters of the Catalan Agency for Water (ECA).

“Mixing a trial for corruption with the fight for the independence of Catalonia, from my point of view, is not acceptable: beyond the rhetoric, there are the facts; the regulations of the Parliament of Catalonia have been applied, as is foreseen for cases like this,” he added.

“You cannot try to mix folders. Crimes related to corruption will be judged in the trial. You cannot try to cover that up with the argument of the fight for the independence of Catalonia. In fact, we want independence to build a country with institutions free from corruption,” he said.

Aragonès has emphasized that his executive “remains committed to independence, self-determination, amnesty and improving the living conditions of citizens.”

Regarding the members of the Parliamentary Committee, branded as “hypocrites” by Borràs, Aragonès wanted to show his “respect” towards them for applying a precept of the regulation that, he recalled, has been in force for five years.
