Fourteen people were injured yesterday in a bus accident in Esplugues de Llobregat. One of the injured was taken in a critical condition to Bellvitge hospital, another had a serious prognosis and was referred to Moisès Broggi, while six were less serious and were treated in various hospital centers and six more were minor injuries, reported the Medical Emergency System (SEM). Everything indicates that an indisposition of the driver, aged 56 and who was one of the most important victims, was the cause of the events.
Sources from the works council confirmed that the worker had started his working day about fifteen minutes before the accident. According to the same sources, he communicated internally that “he was unwell”. Then the protocol was activated to “send an ambulance and a relief”. Communication was lost and moments later the accident was recorded. “It must have been a loss of knowledge or something like that”, they said. The L10 line vehicle, which goes from El Prat to Sant Feliu de Llobregat via l’Hospitalet and Cornellà, was carrying around twenty-five people, several minors. Some came out covered in blood.
The Fire Department received the warning at 1:49 p.m., when the bus operated by Rosanbus and owned by the Metropolitan Area of ??Barcelona (AMB) rushed to the works of the new urban development in Montesa, right where the municipal terms of Esplugues and Cornellà and where apartments and a medical center are now being built. Among the construction workers, on the other hand, no injuries were recorded.
Loli was waiting for another bus in the opposite direction a few meters from the accident: “It stopped at a stop about 100 meters before. Then he was driving slowly and the accident happened”, explained this neighbor, who quickly attended to some of the injured. The stop I was referring to is right on a one-way street and to stay there was to obstruct traffic completely. A few meters further on, where the incident took place, Sant Ildefons avenue becomes two lanes in each direction. “Two weeks ago there were workers working right where it fell”, added Loli.
Héctor lives in the neighborhood of, right next door. “This work seems to be cursed”, he lamented, and recalled the death of a worker in an occupational accident a few months ago. Pepe, also a neighbor, testified that the accident could have been worse: “The bus fell a few meters, but the hole is bigger and it could have gone lower”, he said.
Cranes towed the bus and at the end of the evening it was removed from the road.
