Compromís refutes the arguments of the PSPV and raises up to one million euros the expense that the public health service will entail to cover the expenses of the bous al carrer that are not assumed by the insurers. Yesterday, the Socialists indicated that the impact would be minimal by “tripping the compulsory insurance coverage from 6,000 to 15,000 euros.” “It will only be applied in minimal cases, since the amount of 15,000 euros has been proposed to cover the vast majority of events,” defended the PSPV deputy Ana Besalduch.
However, the coalition’s calculations are somewhat different. Its deputy spokesman Carles Esteve, explained this morning that the decision that the Valencian health system be in charge of the medical coverage of the bous al carrer, proposed by PP and Ciudadanos, and with the vote of Vox and the Socialist Party , “will have a direct economic impact on health care spending that can reach one million euros per year.”
Esteve has informed during the plenary session of Les Corts Valencianes where the health amendments to the 2023 budget law have been debated, the cost of this decision according to data from the Ministry of Health.
“With the million euros per year that this decision could cost, health centers could be built, more psychologists hired for primary care or the reduction of waiting lists reinforced,” he stressed.
The Compromís parliamentarian explained that, until now, health care for people injured during the bous al carrer celebrations (more than 5,400 since 2016), was fully paid for by the organizers and the insurers they contracted. “When the amount of the health intervention exceeded what was contracted with the policy, the organizers of the event were the ones who took charge. In this way, the Valencian health service invoiced the organization for the cost of health care, and looking at the amounts invoiced each year, the annual cost can be verified”, he indicated.
Esteve lamented that “yesterday many representatives of the right, and someone else, voted in favor of a measure without knowing how much it was going to cost public health, today they already know the real impact of what they decided”.
