The Civil Guard in Mallorca resumes the investigation into the disappearance of the under-15-year-old Malén Ortiz ten years after she got off a bus in Magaluf in the direction of her boyfriend’s house and was never heard from again. Civil Guard agents search with trained dogs and with the help of an excavator a plot of land near the place where the minor was last seen, in this area of ??the municipality of Calvià.
The agents try to find out what happened in just 500 meters, from the moment the minor was last seen until she disappeared without a trace. On December 13, 2013, Malén finished classes at the Santa Ponça high school, took a bus and got off at Los Piratas stop, in Santa Ponça. A security camera recorded her walking with her scooter. Another camera, located 500 meters away, no longer recorded anything.
The young woman was going to her boyfriend’s house and told her father, with whom she lived in Mallorca after the separation of her parents. Her first suspicions pointed to a voluntary abandonment of the home. Her father was investigated and it was suspected that the minor could have fled so as not to share a home with him. The minor’s partner was also investigated, but during the beginning of the investigation a voluntary disappearance was thought.
However, already then a man over 60 years of age was examined with a magnifying glass who is now back on the investigators’ radar. He is a lonely person who lived in poor conditions in a booth located very close to where the minor disappeared. Next to the house there is an abandoned lot, which is the one that is now being traced ten years later.
In 2013, this man was already investigated, who had starred in a violent episode with other minors who passed through the area. There were suspicions that he may have been involved in the case, but his involvement was ruled out due to the lack of evidence against him. The Civil Guard agents assure that, in reality, they have never stopped investigating this case. They point out that the matter has been open at all times and that the investigation has now been reopened due to the appearance of new data.
The work of tracking the site continues these days. The excavators have opened trenches in the area to try to discover if there are human remains that could be those of the missing child. The entire plot located in the Magaluf area is being combed, in an area very close to where the old man who could be related to the case lived again. It is planned to thoroughly analyze the entire site.
During all these years, Malén’s mother has not stopped demanding that the investigation be kept open. When the events occurred, her mother lived outside of Spain, but she returned to Mallorca after her disappearance. She has always maintained that her daughter did not leave voluntarily and for years she has denounced that the investigation was not carried out properly at first. She now maintains that if the body of her daughter appears in the lot that is being combed, it will be confirmation that something went wrong 10 years ago.
