After a week with spring temperatures, winter has once again imposed itself on the Peninsula. The polar air front, which arrived last Wednesday afternoon, has already painted some regions of northern Spain white.

During the morning of this Thursday, the first snowfalls were recorded in the interior of Cantabria, the Basque Country, Navarra, the surroundings of the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees and the eastern northern plateau, with accumulations of more than five centimeters in 24 hours from 500 or 600 meters.

As reported by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), the storm has affected 67 roads in the north of the peninsula, affecting Castilla y León above all. Eleven of the roads are from the main road network and the other 57 are secondary. In addition, there are 11 roads closed to vehicle traffic.

One of the regions most affected by the storm has been Castilla y León with copious snowfalls where it has been necessary to close traffic on various state highways and limit speed on numerous roads. The nine provinces of the community were already on alert for possible snowfall.

In some cities like Soria, snow has been present since early in the morning, but it has not caused problems since it has not set, while in other provinces such as Ávila, the twelve Provincial Council machines have been working since this morning to condition the roads.

In the community of Navarra, the regional government has activated a device of 73 snowplows. Likewise, it has activated the mandatory use of chains on 7 highways in the north of the region due to the accumulation of snow on the road.

The General Directorate of Works and Infrastructures has arranged an operation to attend to roads with possible effects due to snow. Most of them are located between the Autopista de Navarra (AP-15), the highway to Logroño (A12) and the highways of Guipúzcoa and Álava (A10).

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in Navarra has issued an orange warning for snow in the northern and central areas of the Foral Community, where snow thicknesses of up to 20 and 5 centimeters, respectively, can be recorded in the last 24 hours. The forecast announces a progressive decrease in rainfall in the last hours of Thursday and in the early hours of Friday.

Snow has fallen in the Galician province of Ourense where snowfall has been recorded in the last few hours at different points located above 600 meters.

The storm has caused the suspension of the first stage of O Gran Camiño, which stopped 15 kilometers from the end of the first stage of the race due to heavy snowfall.
