From a certain age since its first registration, cars must periodically pass the ITV inspection. This is an inspection whose objective is to guarantee that vehicles circulate in perfect condition on public roads. Despite the fact that the law obliges you to carry out this procedure, there are many drivers who drive cars without having their license up to date.
According to data provided by the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (AECA-ITV), the percentage of vehicles that circulated in 2022 on the country’s roads without the technical inspection in force exceeded 35%. Undoubtedly, this is a high figure that compromises road safety, since, as the managing director of AECA-ITV, Guillermo Magaz, points out, “if a vehicle presents a defect in any of its systems, it is more likely to cause or have an accident.”
And it is in this type of review where the most important incidents are detected, some of which make it impossible to overcome it the first time. To ensure that they do not receive an unfavorable or negative resolution, some drivers take the vehicle to the mechanic with the purpose of having it set up in order to pass the ITV without problems.
The Norauto workshop network explains that the most frequent failure that its professionals usually find in this type of action is located in the lighting and signaling: blown bulbs, turn signals that do not work, incorrect lighting adjustment… Some of these incidents can be classified as serious; for example, the fact that a light that projects the beam higher than normal and, therefore, can dazzle other drivers.
Secondly, problems with the suspension and steering are usually located. At this point, it should be said that the wheels are largely forgotten, despite their importance in terms of safety, since they are the only point of contact with the asphalt. For this reason, it is also necessary to make sure that the tires are in perfect condition, with the correct pressure and the correct tread depth.
Norauto indicates that the third most common incidence corresponds to the level of emissions, which exceeds the established limits. Fourthly, there are failures with the brakes. “This is especially worrisome and important, since a vehicle that does not brake properly or on time can lead to a serious traffic accident,” says Víctor Pardo, Market Manager and Norauto Workshop Projects.
In this same sense Magaz is positioned, who recommends “regularly reviewing, at least, the condition of the pads and discs and the level of the brake fluid”. Despite being such an important component, ITV station specialists encounter vehicles with serious deficiencies on a daily basis: split brake discs, brake drums with a lack of material or loss of brake fluid are just some of the defects found. From AECA-ITV, they explain what are the most common problems in the braking system.
It can be due, for example, to the wear of the brake pads since the calipers have to close more to compensate for this wear or the existence of any brake fluid leak along the hydraulic circuit through which it moves (this cause It’s really worrisome.)
The brake discs are the devices used to guarantee the reduction of the speed of each of the wheels of the vehicle, until it comes to a stop. This is due to the friction that is created when the brake pads together with the calipers catch the disc when you actuate the pedal. Some of the damage that can be seen in brake discs are: warped, broken, scratched and crystallized.
This situation may be an indication of a problem in the braking system. If when you press the brake pedal it feels too hard, it takes more travel or the travel is shortened, it may be due to a problem with the calipers, damaged brake discs, a brake booster failure or a problem with the fluid. brakes.
As we have previously mentioned, if a vehicle has serious or very serious faults, it will not pass the ITV review. Then you will receive an unfavorable or negative result. In the first case, the driver has a period of two months to correct the errors. He can only drive the car to take it to the workshop and pass the ITV again at a future appointment. In the second case, when the ITV is negative, the car cannot circulate and must be towed by crane to the workshop for repair.
