When our pet gets sick, it is difficult to determine the severity of his illness. After all, they cannot explain to us what is happening to them or where it hurts. Therefore, it is our duty to know our furry companion well to identify when his behavior and mood is not the usual, clear indications that something is wrong.

Sometimes, we choose to wait a reasonable time to find out if it is a temporary discomfort or we really should go to the vet. Either because we do not consider it necessary immediately, or because we do not want to assume the cost of emergency care or because the animal is afraid. But you have to know that postponing that visit can be fatal for your pet.

In case of doubt, it is always a good idea to take it to a professional to evaluate its condition. But, in addition, let’s see some signs that denote that we are facing an emergency and that you should go to the vet as soon as possible.

There is no need to be scared if our pet has vomited or expelled feces with a soft consistency in a timely manner. But if either of these two episodes occurs recurrently in a short period of time, it could be something serious. If you also stop drinking water, you could become dehydrated. It is also worrisome if you have difficulty urinating and show pain when doing so.

The urgency is exacerbated if there is blood in his secretions or if the dog tries to vomit but only froth, which could be a sign of a twisted stomach that requires surgery.

If your pet has trouble breathing, you should go to the vet as soon as possible. Maybe he has a respiratory problem or even a heart problem. Or you may have swallowed something that has gotten stuck and is blocking your airway. In this case, you should never try to extract it on your own, as you could make it worse.

Animals don’t always know what they can eat and what they can’t, so it’s your job to make sure they don’t eat anything harmful. Cleaning products and certain foods are toxic to our pets, as well as certain foods that may seem harmless to you, but are lethal to them. If you suspect that they have eaten something inappropriate, it is time to go to the vet.

If your pet moans, whines and complains, limps exaggeratedly in some extremity, does not allow itself to be stroked, is apathetic and has no appetite, you should not ignore these signs of pain.

The stings of certain insects such as bees or wasps can have very serious consequences for our pets. Do not hesitate to take him to the vet if the case arises.

Wounds can become infected and can be really messy. If your pet cuts itself on something, is bitten by another animal, or has any other type of incision, go to the vet so they can clean and heal it properly.
