The president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Rafael Mozo, who replaced Carlos Lesmes as substitute in October, resigned yesterday from receiving the salary of 151,000 euros gross per year that corresponds to the position of president of the Supreme Court and of the governing body of the judges, after the newspaper El Español published yesterday that he received this salary despite the fact that he did not step on the TS, and from now on he will limit his salary to that of a member of the Council.

The remuneration that Mozo received until now was the same as that of his predecessor, who also held the position of president of the Supreme Court. However, this position is not held by him but by magistrate Francisco Marín Castán and in fact Mozo does not maintain any professional relationship with the High Court.

In a statement released yesterday, Mozo defends that he has acted “in accordance with the law and in accordance with the criteria and information of the technical bodies of the General Council of the Judiciary” to receive the compensation that corresponds to the president of the Supreme Court and of the Council according to the Law of General State Budgets of 2022 and 2023. It also recalls that these perceptions were agreed by the Plenary of the governing body of the judges and supervised by the Intervention of the same.

However, he announces that “to avoid any damage to my honor and the image of the General Council of the Judiciary” he waives receiving any remuneration that exceeds what would correspond to him as a member of the governing body of judges.

Mozo was appointed substitute president of the CGPJ on October 13 by the plenary session of the Council itself as the oldest member.
