As happens in many places, in Solsona manpower and people who know how to work a trade are necessary. The Agència del Desenvolupament Local detected this niche and, therefore, has promoted the creation of a school for gardens and workers. “What we have done is put the pieces of a puzzle together,” says the mayoress of Solsona, Judit Gispert.
The center was born with the double objective of improving the job placement of unemployed people and responding to the needs of the sectors. Access is free, but it is necessary to be unemployed, not collect unemployment and reside in the old town of Solsona. This is the case of Gerardo Kiwirt, a training palette that takes advantage of the course to update knowledge. Six of the participants will work in the municipal brigade for half a year.
The school offers training from Monday to Friday throughout the month of March. Specifically, they are taught to carry out maintenance and rehabilitation work on buildings and also to intervene in public spaces and green areas. In this sense, students learn basic concepts in construction, electricity, plumbing and gardening.
Of the eight participants, there will be six who are hired in the municipal brigade for six months and full time. The election based on criteria that have already been established and that take into account aspects such as the duration of unemployment or the family responsibilities of each candidate.
Both the students and the promoters value the initiative very well. The director of the school, Xavi Díaz, regrets the lack of manpower and, therefore, defends initiatives like this: “They help a lot”. In fact, the initiative is possible thanks to a grant from the Employment Service of Catalonia and the program is part of the District Plan of Solsona City Council.
Regarding future calls, first the reception of the project in this first experience will be assessed and it will be decided how the next ones will be from the Agència de Desenvolupament Local and the brigade.
