Cats are the second favorite pet for Spaniards, only behind dogs. Kittens are an excellent pet to have at home, since they are usually small, very calm, not very noisy and quite clean. However, they have a habit that goes against furniture and home decoration: they love to scratch.

They don’t do it as a form of attack because they don’t like your decorative style. The reality is that it is part of their instinct, because this is how they mark territory by impregnating their scent. In addition, in this way they sharpen their nails. Therefore, sofas are usually your main goal since they are resistant but soft.

To remedy this problem, you should buy a scratching post for your cat and probably teach him how to use it properly so that he doesn’t get rough with your sofas. But if you have already done yours with claws, don’t worry, you can repair the upholstery of your sofa with a few simple tips without having to buy a new one.

To repair a fabric sofa scratched by your cat, you will need an upholsterer’s needle or a large knitting needle. The next thing will be to introduce each thread taken out by the pussycat again in its place. You will have to be patient and do it carefully so that it looks like new. This solution is perfect if the scratch is not too severe.

If the damage has been greater, you can go to a fabric store or upholstery and buy a piece of fabric as similar as possible to the fabric of your sofa. The next thing will be to sew it with a needle and thread, as if it were a patch to cover the affected area. If this does not convince you either, you can find a fabric cover that fits the dimensions of your sofa and cover it. It will be like new.

As for leather, skin or similar sofas, the repair is somewhat more complex. This is so because as a result of the scratches, surely pieces of fabric have come off and your sofa has been pierced.

To solve it, the first step will be to remove the skin threads that are raised. You can do this with scissors, a razor, or smooth sandpaper. Do it delicately so as not to further spoil the material. Then, if the damage is superficial, you can fix it by applying a leather repair agent with a clean, lint-free cotton cloth.

But if the damage is more serious, you will have to resort to liquid leather. It is a filling paste that simulates the texture of leather and you will find it in many DIY stores, hardware stores or, of course, online. Apply this product following the manufacturer’s instructions. You will most likely have to sand it down afterwards to get an even texture and apply a stain that is the same color as the sofa.
