The mayor of Madrid, José Luis MartÃnez-Almeida, has refused to emulate Paris, where the public has decided by referendum to prohibit electric scooters, and is committed to an orderly limitation like that of the capital where three company authorizations coexist (Lime , Dott and Tier) for a total of 6,000 vehicles.
This has been transferred to the media, after learning that 89.03% of Parisian voters have rejected the renewal of the contracts of electric scooter rental companies.
“I do not agree that the solution is to prohibit, as the left usually does. That is to say, I believe that the question is not to prohibit. I believe that the question is to order, and I believe that the question is that there are different modes of mobility for the city of Madrid that must coexist with each other and with pedestrians”, he stated.
The current municipal government team reduced the authorizations to three compared to the ten that the Manuela Carmena Mayor’s Office allowed with 40% more vehicles.
In the same way, within these authorizations, companies have been forced “to have the scooters with a technological system that prevents them from driving through unauthorized areas and that prevents them from parking in unauthorized areas.”
“It seems to me much more reasonable, it seems to me much more sensible, to order in this way, forcing companies to have to incorporate this technology, than to simply prohibit it by means of a referendum, which has also had a negligible participation in relation to what it is. the population of the whole of Paris”, he said.
MartÃnez-Almeida has lamented that “the policies of the left consist of prohibiting” when they see a problem. “We chose to order a mode of mobility that should be part of a menu of mobility alternatives in a big city like Madrid”, she reiterated.
If these authorized companies do not comply with the conditions, the councilor has detailed, “the authorization is revoked, it is as simple as this.” Thus, “the company that does not comply with these authorization documents will have its authorization to operate in the city of Madrid revoked”, he concluded.
