When a person abandons their pet to their fate on the street, they do not think about everything that could happen to them. He simply decides to put aside his responsibilities because he can no longer take care of the animal. At best, a homeless dog may be adopted by a kind soul or animal shelter, but at worst, he may be harmed, starved, and mistreated.

An example of this is Bear, a dog who spent almost a year with his head trapped inside a plastic box. This Italian mastiff lived alone and on the street until WKRG, the network in the state of Alabama (United States) made this news public and sparked a wave of solidarity among the audience.

The story reached the ears of viewers in January 2024, but according to the witnesses in the report, the dog had already been seen months ago in this terrible situation.

Being a large and strong breed of dog, whose specimens are used as protection dogs, no one wanted to approach him to help him. Bear was not dangerous, but he commanded respect from anyone who passed by and that complicated his rescue and release.

Fortunately, thanks to the work of the television network and the local Animal Services, Bear was trapped with a very ingenious tactic: they had to build a barricade with no exits. At first they tried all kinds of tricks, traps and tranquilizers, but all in vain.

The Italian mastiff was trapped for almost a year in that plastic prison that, luckily, had holes and allowed him to drink water and eat anything he found on the street. The director of Animal Services, Robert Bryant, said in a television interview that Bear had become the shelter’s new ambassador.

Bryant was interviewed along with another Services volunteer, Martin Miller, a man who also helped throughout the rescue procedure and ultimately decided to adopt the dog since no one wanted to. Miller is committed to this animal and will not let it suffer the same way again.
