With the arrival of good weather we feel like spending more time outdoors, both in nature and in the street as well as in our private gardens, balconies or terraces. A very common element in these outdoor spaces are awnings, umbrellas or pergolas. Most useful allies to protect us from the sun and maintain a pleasant temperature while we read, have a drink or hang out.

But awnings, umbrellas and pergolas are magnets for dirt, being highly exposed to elements such as wind, rain, sun exposure, dust, pollen, insects, etc. So, little by little, they accumulate a layer of dirt that deteriorates their color and good appearance. If we don’t wash them often, they could deteriorate and even break.

Luckily, cleaning an awning, pergola or umbrella is easier than it may seem. The main difficulty will be access to the structure itself, since you will need to remove it or reach it in height depending on the type. In addition, the fabric itself will determine the most appropriate way to clean it. Since canvas is the most common material, let’s see how to leave it pristine.

If there is a lot of dirt, you can first pass a steam cleaner to soften it before moving on to the next step. Then, mix lukewarm water with a neutral detergent and moisten a cotton or microfiber cloth with which you should thoroughly rub the entire surface of the awning. You can use a soft-bristled brush if you consider it necessary, but don’t rub too hard to avoid damaging the fabric.

Next, dampen another clean cloth in lukewarm water only. With this, rub the awning again to rinse off the soap. Allow the canopy to air dry before re-folding or storing it.

In case there are mold stains, which appear due to excess humidity, you should clean them with a mixture of water, grease-removing soap and a brush or cloth. Rinse the awning with another cloth dampened only with water or with a pressurized water hose if this is possible, taking into account that it does not fall onto the street or other neighboring balconies if you are on a terrace.

It is advisable to apply a special anti-mold product that you will find in hardware stores and specialized garden stores. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and, again, wait until your awning, pergola or parasol is dry before folding or storing it.

In the future, if you frequently pass a vacuum cleaner or soft brush over your awning, you will prevent it from accumulating too much dirt. It is also important to fold it and store it when it rains or, in case it has already gotten wet, do not fold it until it is dry.
