The City Council withdrew yesterday afternoon the contest called on Friday for the demolition of six closed flower shops on La Rambla. A few hours before the cancellation, asked by La Vanguardia, municipal sources said that the publication was a mistake. The tender proposed an investment of 20,000 euros to demolish stalls 2, 7, 11, 13, 15 and 16.

“A study – the sources abounded – concluded that six flower shops were not viable and the City Council considered tearing them down. But since they are an essential element of the Rambla, the municipal government decided to carry out another study that is still underway. The publication of this announcement was a mistake because we do not yet have the new study. When it is finished, the City Council will make a decision. For this reason, the announcement of the municipal contracting platform has already been withdrawn.

The City Council has been considering the possibility of demolishing these stalls managed by the Institut Municipal de Mercats for some time. Most of the eight florists still active, and also the Amics de la Rambla neighborhood and merchants association, understand that these unused stalls should be dedicated to activities that do not compete with them and that somehow revitalize the floral tradition of the Rambla. The Consistory, years ago, set up a radio station here, and plans to install a public toilet in the place occupied by one of these closed posts.
