The Consell de Mallorca has announced that it will only allow entry to the Formentor peninsula from the Ma-2210, from June 1 to September 30, to people who arrive by public transport, on foot or by bicycle between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 10:30 p.m.
It is about “an extension” of dates compared to years ago, with the aim of “adapting to the lengthening of the high season that has been observed” and “the increase in vehicles” in order to “avoid uncivil behavior that two years ago” , has affirmed the insular Ministry of Mobility and Infrastructures.
Specifically, two levels of restriction are established through which only authorized vehicles, public transport, emergency services and bicycles may circulate.
The first level (from km 2 to 8.7) begins at the Puerto de Pollença roundabout and continues to the beach (hotel car park). The second (from km 8.7 to 19.6) goes from the beach to the lighthouse. Authorized vehicles may only park in areas set aside for this purpose and parking on the shoulders of the road will be prohibited.
Mobility have explained that this regulation is intended to “protect an environmentally sensitive space with high landscape values”, in addition to “betting on another type of mobility” and “access to the natural places of the island”, for which they recommend the use public transport to get to Formentor.
In coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic, work has begun to install automatic barriers to “control access more efficiently and provide better information to users.”
“In addition, signaling with cameras and information screens will be reinforced. These barriers will open automatically if there are spaces available in the car parks and will close when the capacity is complete, at the same time that they will also open automatically for all those vehicles that have with authorization”, has indicated the Consell.
The objective of the island body is, on the one hand, to take “a definitive step” in the management of the regulation of access to Formentor, and on the other, “to try to avoid traffic penalties due to ignorance of the measure”. In this sense, he has pointed out that the DGT is the one that has the powers in terms of traffic surveillance and control.
In addition, Mobility will contract a service of informants who will be close to the barriers to resolve doubts and a campaign will also be carried out to disseminate and inform about this traffic regulation in the media and on the Consell website.
As for public transport, the TIB will offer a bus line to facilitate access to the entire restricted area. Line 334, which covers the Alcúdia-Puerto Pollença-Faro de Formentor route, has stops at Mirador des Colomer, Playa de Formentor, Cala Figuera-Cala Murta and Faro de Formentor.
