Even though today marks eight months since the general elections that allowed the coalition government to be consolidated in Moncloa, Sumar officially starts its engines this Saturday. The plurinational group led by Yolanda Díaz has been infected by a slow start to the legislature to the point of having to delay the celebration of its founding assembly to this Saturday. A conclave in which the first stone of its organic structure will be laid with the aim of serving as a home for a left that the confederal space struggles to expand before the next, and tight electoral cycle with the Basque, Catalan and European elections.
The congressional event, which takes place at the ‘La Nave’ venue in Madrid, will serve to outline the bulk of the state leadership (the Coordinating Group) of which 70% corresponds to Sumar and for which the candidacy of the second vice president , Yolanda Díaz, starts as a clear favorite when measured against an alternative list with few options.
The final configuration, however, will not be reached until the coalition parties designate their representatives to complete the other 30% of the body. Thus, it is estimated that no earlier than a month this body will be convened to elect Sumar’s executive and the formal appointment of its leader.
After a brilliant start that allowed him to form a Government alongside the PSOE, Sumar has accumulated a few months of doubts, especially marked by the debacle suffered in the Galician elections. That is why today it seeks to shake off those doubts with the step forward in organic matters that, in turn, will allow it to gain momentum to, in the fall, hold another constituent-type assembly that will delve more deeply into the operating rules of all sectors of Sumar.
Today’s day will have a high political component with political messages during the closing ceremony of the second vice president and all the ministers (Mónica García, Pablo Bustinduy, Sira Rego and Ernest Urtasun), where the future head of ready for the European elections, Estrella Galán, who will also speak.
From the so-called listening process in the summer of 2022 in which Díaz began to take the first steps of his project, through the formation of the coalition of progressive forces in the last general elections and the formation of the Government; Sumar had yet to establish its internal structures and decision-making processes.
In fact, Sumar has protected the 70-30% proportion of its highest management body in the debate phase of its organizational presentation, although it has granted greater power to the parties in the communities.
And it is that in the territorial groups, their original structure in the communities, it is stipulated that this 70-30 correlation can be exceptionally based on the autonomous reality, that the Sumar quota is agreed upon by consensus between the parties and that, in case If this is not possible, those registered to vote will decide.
This congress also comes after putting bilateral relationship agreements on track with the ‘commons’ and Más Madrid as references in their communities, although in the latter case it has snubbed IU Madrid, which has demanded explanations from Sumar and clarification on whether to give up building an autonomous brand.
In addition, it must close the places of the parties on the coalition list for the European elections, given that IU, Más Madrid, ‘comunes’, Compromís and Verdes Equo are asking for and waiting for starting positions.
