Processions such as the Sant Enterrament will once again fill the Barri Vell with solemnity for Holy Week. And the cathedral of Girona, silent at night, seems to be already preparing for this event, as can be seen in this series of photographs in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.

The passage (from the Latin passus, which refers to scene, suffering) will be the protagonist in the coming days. It is the platform where religious images are carried in processions in processions. In some places in Spain they are also known as andas or thrones.

In Girona they are already preparing to go out, decorated, in the procession escorted by the manaies, the Roman soldiers who traditionally parade during Holy Week.

The first reliable documentary data on the existence of the manaies in Girona dates back to 1751, as detailed by the Confradia de Jesús Crucificat.

The cathedral of Santa María de Girona is an epicenter of the Holy Week celebrations. It is located at the highest point of the city. And it has the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a total width of 22.98 meters. At the top of a spectacular staircase with 90 steps there is a compendium of five centuries of history.
