The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested a 34-year-old man accused of killing his 39-year-old partner in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona). The agents of the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) have arrested the suspect this morning at the home he shared with the victim, after he stabbed him several times, according to police sources.
Despite the resuscitation attempts by the emergency services, the woman died at her home, on Cornellà Modern street, where the couple’s two-year-old daughter was also located.
The first information suggests that the detainee, who did not have a criminal record due to complaints with the victim, attacked his partner with a knife after having a heated argument. He made six stab wounds.
If the motive is confirmed, it would be the twenty-second woman who has died at the hands of her partner, or ex-partner, so far this year. The case will be investigated by the Cornellà Court for Violence against Women, reports the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) in a statement.
The flags fly at half mast at the Cornellà Town Hall. The town of Baix Llobregat celebrated its Major Festival, but all the events that had to be carried out to commemorate Corpus Christi have been cancelled.
On the other hand, three days of official mourning have been declared and this Sunday afternoon, at 7:00 p.m. in the Plaza de Catalunya, a rally will be organized to condemn the sexist murder. “Today is a very hard and sad day. Our city has been muddied by the mud of the barbarity of sexist violence”, said the mayor of Cornellà , Antonio Balmón.
The Generalitat de Catalunya, meanwhile, has reported that the Equality and Feminisms department is following this case and has made itself available to the family and entourage of the victim, of Latin American origin, while asking to “guarantee the maximum privacy in these difficult times” of all relatives and close friends.
