The renowned meteorologist Mario Picazo has revealed in an interview with LOC that he has been the target of death threats on social networks due to his position on scientific issues and his activism against climate change. Picazo, who currently resides in California, has been the target of attacks by followers of conspiracy theorists such as flat earthers.
In the interview, Picazo comments: “They have threatened me with death and everything! (…) Some days I would erase myself from the map. But I say ‘no, I have to continue defending what I believe in'”. Despite the threats, the meteorologist stands firm in his convictions and continues to educate about climate change and base his arguments on science.
In addition to his work as a meteorologist, Picazo also works as a professor at the University of California, where he teaches classes on climate change: “I have a class on climate change of 200 people, aimed at students of all majors. I feel that being a teacher is my natural sideâ€. The renowned communicator feels comfortable in his role as a teacher and enjoys the debates and his students’ interest in learning.
As for his television future, Picazo currently collaborates on TVE’s Aquà la tierra program, where he addresses issues related to sustainability and climate change. Although in the past he participated in the Survivors program, today he prefers formats that are more focused on the outdoors and nature: “I am more from outdoors than from sets.”
Regarding his return to Spain, Picazo reveals that he plans to return in 2024, once his children have completed their studies: “I’m staying until my youngest son finishes school. I already want to go back because I want to get involved in other projectsâ€. He also mentions his culinary skills, being known as “the king of paella” around him in California, where he prepares delicious paellas for his Spanish friends. Although he has not considered commercializing his culinary talent, he does not rule out the possibility of starting a business related to gastronomy in the future: “Maybe one day I will end up in a beach bar, making paellas… Or in MasterChef. I did the casting and they took meâ€.
Despite the threats and challenges he has faced, Mario Picazo remains a passionate advocate for science and climate change. His courageous stand and desire to educate and raise awareness on these issues make him a leading figure in the world of meteorology and science outreach.
