The PP’s pulse did not tremble to close yesterday quickly and without any complex an agreement with Vox to ensure governability in the Valencian Community and can do the same today in the Balearic Islands. The popular act like this because they consider that this will not cause them great wear and tear in the elections of the next 23-J. Vox has been whitewashed by many media outlets and, as our colleague Josep Martí Blanch quite rightly states, especially by the citizens themselves who have supported them in large numbers. When so many people vote for them and do so repeatedly, the cordons sanitaires are of very little use.
Spain is not Germany, where the then Chancellor Angela Merkel had the election of the Thuringian prime minister revoked in 2020 for having been chosen with the votes of the Alternative for Germany (AfD). The sanitary cordons do work there and nobody wants to agree with the ultra-right.
On the other hand, here, the PSOE would do well not to focus its entire electoral campaign on the fear that Vox could govern because it could happen that the right-wing voter ends up supporting the PP as happened in Andalusia, where Juan Moreno Bonilla achieved a majority .
However, the Vox company is not innocuous. The PP campaign spokesman, Borja Sémper, had to go out and veto the leader of Vox in Valencia, Carlos Flores, because he was sentenced in 2002 for psychological violence against his wife. The formation of Santiago Abascal reacted by excluding him from the future government in Valencia and decided to put him number one on the list for Congress. It is strange that what is not valid for the regional government can be valid for the San Jerónimo race, but it was a swallow of Vox who accepted it because the pact with the PP assures them the presidency of the Corts Valencianes and some ministries.
Vox is going to enter many other Spanish town halls hand in hand with the PP and there will be time to assess its performance. The PP would prefer not to close this type of agreement with Vox, but it will not hesitate to do so despite the proximity of the 23-J elections. It is a symptom of the reality of Spain. Let everyone draw their own conclusions.
