The new mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas (Guanyem), defended today in his first speech after taking office the “solidity”, “strength” and “legitimacy” of the municipal government formed by Guanyem, Junts and ERC and which adds 17 of the 27 ediles that constitute the plenary.

Salellas, who has been sworn in as mayor with the formula of the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI), has stressed that the government represents the “two great majorities that exist in the city: the progressive and the independentista”, but has denied that this “be a party government that only governs for a few sectors or a few neighborhoods.”

In his speech, Salellas reached out to the winner of the elections, Sílvia Paneque, from the PSC, to “be able to reach large city agreements” on issues of mobility, urban area, housing and others. “Although it is from outside the government, I am convinced that there is room for understanding and agreement,” she said.

The new mayor, who is only 38 years old, has also remembered the former president of the Generalitat and the former mayor of the city, Carles Puigdemont. “The Process towards the independence of our people has led, for example, that today one of our mayors cannot accompany us to the plenary session, which, without a doubt, is an injustice,” he said.

Guanyem, Junts and ERC presented yesterday the municipal agreement, according to which Gemma Geis (Junts) will be vice-mayor and occupy the first mayoralty and Quim Ayats, of ERC, the second.

A city model that of Guanyem and Junts differed in some matters. “We have different visions but we will know how to take the curves because the common objective is the best for Girona”, indicated Geis, during his speech.

Criticism was expressed by Sílvia Paneque, from the PSC, who on March 28 was the most voted list with eight councilors, the same as Guanyem. The head of the list explained that the agreement reached by Guanyem and Junts, together with ERC, “does not have a simple explanation” and that “the mayor’s office has a high price.”
