The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the public company Turismo de Islas Canarias, has displayed a large billboard in its main market, the United Kingdom, in which it congratulates Manchester City after winning the Champions League.

The Government of the Islands wanted to wink at the fans of the blue team by congratulating them on a victory they had been chasing for many years. In recent seasons they came close to getting the long-awaited orejona, but on June 10 the team led by Pep Guardiola lifted the first Champions League in the club’s history.

Through a large canvas, located in front of the main shopping street in the city of Manchester, Market Street, they play on words with the distinctive color of the club, sky blue, -hence the name sky blues with the that they are popularly recognized-, and the best blue skies that the islands boast.

The Government of the Canary Islands promotes itself in this way in the country that receives the most tourists each year. In 2022, almost 5 million visitors from the United Kingdom arrived, that is, 34% of the 14.6 million tourists that the islands received in the past year.

The city of Manchester, specifically, is the second city from which more English tourists depart for the islands, only surpassed by London. 30% of British visitors travel to the archipelago from the capital of the United Kingdom, while 18% of the total travel from Manchester.
