The Civil Guard has arrested a 35-year-old British man who was on the run after killing a 49-year-old Ibizan cyclist whom he ran over with an SUV last Tuesday on the road to Benimussa, in the municipality of Sant Josep. The man has been arrested for the crimes of reckless homicide, abandoning the scene of the accident, reckless driving and driving without a license, the Peripheral Communication Office (OPC) of the Balearic Islands Command reported in a statement.
The arrest occurred this past midnight, when the alleged perpetrator of the road accident turned himself in at the Civil Guard offices in Sant Antoni. At the time of the arrest, the agents read him his rights and the reasons for the arrest, and he was transferred to the Can Sifre barracks, in the municipality of Eivissa, for investigation of the proceedings.
After the accident that ended the life of the Ibizan cyclist, the Civil Guard launched an investigation to try to locate the driver and the vehicle.
The agents, with the collaboration of citizens, located on Wednesday the vehicle with which the hit-and-run occurred. It is a black convertible Jeep Wrangler that was found in a rural area of ??the municipality of Sant Josep.
At the same time, various control devices from the Quick Action Group (GAR) of the Civil Guard and other agents of the Ibiza Company set up devices to locate the fleeing driver throughout the day on Wednesday.
The victim, who died at the scene of the accident without the emergency services being able to do anything to save his life, was a well-known cycling fan in sports circles on the island.
