The workers who are in charge of cleaning the beaches of the metropolitan area have been surprised by something unexpected. At six in the morning, on the Prat de Llobregat beach, three bales of hashish have been discovered among the waste that has piled up these days as a result of the strong storms that have unloaded in Catalonia in recent days. The operators have communicated the finding to the Mossos d’Esquadra who have been in charge of guarding the merchandise, as confirmed by the Catalan police and the AMB, the competent entity for the maintenance of the 42 beaches that extend through the metropolitan conurbation.

The Mossos have opened an investigation to find the origin of the merchandise and those responsible for having transported it to El Prat. It is unusual for drug traffickers to unload drugs on the beaches of Baix Llobregat and the Barcelona conurbation as these are highly populated areas, and they prefer to use less crowded ones on the Tarragona coast, especially the Ebro delta. The last landing of hashish that was produced in the Barcelona area was in February in the port of Mataró where 15 people were arrested when they tried to unload a drug boat.

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has strengthened the cleaning device this summer and has activated an exceptional team to act after storms, as happened in this case. Weather forecasts anticipate a summer of strong afternoon storms in the interior of Catalonia. This scenario will cause the flow of the Llobregat and Besós rivers to rise, which in turn will lead to the accumulation of more waste that will flow into the metropolitan beaches.
