Vila-seca has recovered 27 tons of organic remains from tourist establishments since May 2022, mainly from Port Aventura World Resort and the Salou La Marinada hotel. It is the balance of waste treatment of this type since the start-up of the Torre d’en Dolça composting area.

The Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda indicates that the 27,000 kilos of organic waste have been converted into seven tons of “high quality” compost. The department also indicates that the tourist seasonality in the area is evident in the amounts contributed, which vary from 300 kilos per week in winter to double in summer. The compound obtained is destined for the social garden of Cáritas and the City Council.

The people in charge of the waste treatment complex have presented the results this Thursday within the framework of the final conference of the European project Sircles, a project in which 24 people have been trained in composting.

The initiative has been replicated in the Tarragona Educational Complex, where an area with five composters has been installed, which will soon start operating, with the aim of being an inspiration for the creation of other composting plants in the area.

Sircles is a project that explores new employment opportunities aimed at groups in vulnerable situations. The program applies a circular economy model in the field of composting. Ten partners from seven different countries collaborate, working to create new pilot projects for composting areas or improve existing ones.

The scope of the project extends to the entire Mediterranean, with four pilot projects on the island of Andros (Greece), Bizerte (Tunisia), Byblos (Lebanon) and Aqaba (Jordan). Besides, in Apulia (Italy) and in Ramallah (Palestine) the effectiveness of already existing plants is being improved within the framework of the same initiative.
