The Covid-19 pandemic changed many behaviors in our society, but one of the most prominent was the way of working. Teleworking was established in a large number of companies practically as an obligation in the face of the danger of contagion from the coronavirus and led to a general change in habits of the population.
However, today many companies still continue to maintain their teleworking policy despite the fact that the greatest danger of the pandemic has passed. The general idea is that the vast majority of employees prefer to work from home than not having to go to the office, but is it always like this?
Alejandro Pociña, CEO of Steelcase Iberia (company dedicated to the design, optimization and equipment of work spaces), has revealed that “77% of Generation Z prefer to attend offices in person, while the percentage among baby boomers revolves around around 50%”, according to studies by the multinational.
“This is due to the fact that young people are immersed in a period of coupling to the world of work, while the older ones have already obtained that experience and do not need to be in the offices”, the study concluded, which has disproved many myths about how young people view working from home.
However, doubts about teleworking do not only arise with young people: “People who work remotely have 33% less commitment and 20% more probability of leaving the company. For this reason, a revolution is taking place in the design of spaces”, explains Pociña, collecting different international studies.
In this sense, the director of Steelcase Iberia calls for companies to propose “increasing the attraction of employees so that it is worthwhile for people the effort to go to the office, knowing that if they do not go they will lose many things”, as demonstrated by the studies cited on remote work.
On the other hand, despite what is believed to be a trend, still “75% of work in SMEs is face-to-face”, while “the large technology companies that had closed offices are reopening them”, because ” they are realizing that in those businesses where speed is key, it is very difficult to maintain this rhythm when all the members of a team are dispersed”.
