The world of journalism is in mourning since this Thursday, August 17, for the death of the journalist and writer Hilario López Millán at the age of 78. The communicator, who gained great prestige for his career on radio and television, has died of dehydration, as his great friend Albert Castillón has assured on social networks.

“A few hours ago, a genius of the radio and copla, my friend Hilario López Millán, died. Extreme dehydration ended with one of the greats of communication. My condolences to her husband Alberto. She will rest with her mother and her friend Rocío Jurado ”, were Castillón’s words to announce the sad news.

López Millán became one of the most prominent journalists of the 1990s and 2000s, due to his extensive knowledge of musical topics and his great friendship with folkloric artists such as Rocío Jurado, Lola Flores, Concha Piquer or Juanita Reina.

“Goodbye my dear Hilario López Millán. Teacher, generous, good friend and best companion. Now your great friend, Rocío Jurado will be waiting for you to sing you one of her verses. A kiss for Alberto, your life partner and my love… “, has published the journalist Aurelio Manzano. And it is that Hilario López Millán and Alberto had been sharing experiences for more than 45 years, and they got married 20 years ago.

The late journalist spent the last years of his life with his partner in his homeland, Hellín, Albacete, where he decided to return after spending half his life in Madrid. In the mid-60s he packed his bags to go to the capital to fulfill his dream. He trained at the Estación Escuela de Radio Juventud and from that moment on he began his professional career in the world of radio.

Encarna Sánchez, María Teresa Campos or Ana Rosa Quintana are some of the figures who worked with López Millán at some point. But, without a doubt, if there is something that he was passionate about, it was the copla. And it is that the journalist came to release an album in the year 2000 called As De Coplas, but he was not the only one.

His love for this musical style made him one of the most recognized faces on the Canal Sur program Se llama copla starting in 2007 and for five years. The space presented by Eva González was a complete success, partly due to her contributions as a jury.

If there was one thing Hilario López Millán knew how to do, it was to remember a stage in his life in which he experienced great things, and he always did so with his characteristic tone of humor. Of course, he never revealed any of the many secrets that he knew about his great friends, the best-known folkloric artists in this country. Now, he is leaving a renowned journalist, but he will remain in the memory of his 55-year professional career.
