Malaga will have a public cemetery for pets at the end of this year. It will be the first of its kind to open its doors in our country. A facility where dog or cat owners will be able to bury their adventure companion and visit them frequently, although it will also offer the option of cremation.
According to the Malaga City Council, the installation will involve an investment of more than one million euros. The complex will have a citizen service building (reception area, administrative office, office for veterinary use and toilets), crematorium, farewell room, a green space for the deposit of ashes and a burial area.
The council will offer citizens the possibility of cremating or burying their pets for a price of between 170 and 250 euros, depending on the weight of the animal. It will also offer other services such as the transfer of dead animals, celebration of a farewell ceremony, rental of niches and columbariums or deregistration of pets.
“To determine the rates, the prices applied in other pet cemeteries in Spain and in animal crematoriums in the province have been taken into account, as well as the feasibility study carried out for its implementation,” the City Council explains. from Malaga.
In an informative note, the local executive assures that the creation of this pet cemetery “responds to the growing social sensitivity regarding the respect and care of animals.”
Malaga is the Andalusian province with the highest number of pets. According to data from the Official College of Veterinarians, there are more than 350,000 pet animals registered, which represents 23% of the Andalusian census.
It will be a pioneer cemetery in the community and at the state level. In Andalusia, there is none with these characteristics, because the existing ones are private. In Spain, it will be the first public to open and offer its services.
Barcelona City Council also announced the construction of a municipal cemetery for pets in Collserola by 2024, where the council plans to carry out around seven thousand annual animal cremation services during the first years. The cost of individual cremation would be 200 euros per animal.
