The reopening of metro line 1 in Madrid has brought a surprise: some 20,000 travelers a day who used that line cannot use the Atocha stop because it is still closed.

The reason is that the technicians have advised that it not be opened due to the expansion works on metro line 11 as it passes through the emblematic Madrid station.

To alleviate this problem, the Transportation Consortium keeps free buses enabled for those citizens who need to use that line and get on or off near said Atocha stop. However, throughout this week there have been complaints from some travelers on social networks.

In this way, travelers can now use line 1 from Sol to Nueva Numancia, while the section cut to Valdecarros can be used from next October 14.

This is the oldest suburban line in Madrid, part of which has been closed for three summer months to carry out improvements. The amount of the works has risen to 10.7 million euros.

This suburban line came into operation in 1919 and is the only one that reaches the districts of Puente de Vallecas and Villa de Vallecas, which have a combined population of 347,000 people.
