The South Korean Lotte Energy Materials, a world leader in the production of elecfoil, a component with copper sheets essential in the manufacture of electric batteries, detailed this Monday its expansion plans and the construction schedule of its first plant in Mont-roig del Camp (Baix Camp).
The general director, Lim Taeil, visiting to see first-hand the land where up to three factories are planned (1.2 billion investment), announced for “early 2024” the first earthworks to build the first of the three plants. “In October 2025 we hope to start producing after investing 400 million,” he specified after meeting with the mayor, Fran Morancho, the Minister of Business and Work, Roger Torrent, and the Government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto.
Lim Taeil, CEO of Lotte Energy Materials Spain, explained that expansion plans “will depend on the demand for electric cars and lithium batteries in Europe.” After opening the first plant in autumn 2025, with the creation of 200 direct jobs, the pace of the market will therefore set the investment calendar in the second, never before 2028, and third factory.
The Lotte Energy center in Mont-roig will supply its European customers, with an annual production of 30,000 tons of elecfoil, a key component of lithium batteries. The maximum production expected to be achieved could exceed 100,000 tons. “It is a strategic investment for Catalonia and its reindustrialization,” highlighted Minister Torrent. Currently, Lotte produces the elecfoil that it exports to Europe in Malaysia, but it takes almost two months to deliver the product; From Mont-roig the delivery time will be one week.
