The Government of Marga Prohens has dismissed a senior official who is accused of a crime of sexual assault. This is the general director of the public telecommunications and innovation company (Ibetec), Juan Antonio Serra Ferrer, who was tried this week for trying to lick the face and kiss a stranger. The Prosecutor’s Office is asking for three years in prison because, in addition, Serra attacked one of the police officers who were trying to arrest him, according to Diario de Mallorca. Ferrer was removed from the University, where he was an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics.
The Department of Economy, to which the aggressor depends, has reported the sudden dismissal of Ferrer upon learning of the accusations and the opening of an oral trial. “The Government of the Balearic Islands reiterates its commitment and absolute rejection of all forms of violence against women and its commitment to putting all resources and measures in the protection of women and in the fight against this social scourge,” it states. a statement.
The attack occurred in August of last year, in a restaurant in the center of Palma. The dismissed senior official approached a woman he did not know at all and tried to kiss her. The woman, who was with a group of family and friends at the time, resisted, but Serra approached her again and licked her face.
One of the diners at the restaurant called the police and, when the officers arrived, the accused tried to flee despite being stopped repeatedly. The man punched some of the police officers and injured another in the shoulder when he tried to stop them from catching up with him. He was finally arrested and taken to the Palma police station.
The woman reported that, as a result of the attack, she suffered cervical damage and a mental disorder that she already suffered was aggravated since she also suffered from anxiety. The attacked police officer, on her part, was on leave for two weeks. In addition to the three-year prison sentence, the prosecutor requests compensation of 2,900 euros for the two injured.
As a result of these events, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) opened a file and decided to remove it as a precautionary measure. In a statement, the UIB assured that this type of behavior was not tolerable and reiterated the social commitment and importance of the University to transmit “civic and democratic values.”
