The Catalan Nurses union has called an indefinite strike by these professionals in the public health system of Catalonia, which will begin on December 12.
In a statement, this union organization explained this Friday that the call for an indefinite strike “responds to the contempt towards our profession reflected in the III Collective Labor Agreement of acute care hospitals, primary care, socio-health and mental health centers concluded with the Servei Català de la Salut”, signed in January of this year.
Nor are they in favor of the pre-agreement of the Third Agreement on working conditions of the statutory staff of the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) reached on November 22.
“This contempt is especially evident in the case of midwives, who are forced to have the specialty to practice,” they considered, adding that nurses are “mistreated” in working conditions and financial remuneration.
The nurses of the public health system of Catalonia maintain, “we have reached the limit and we can no longer tolerate the repeated contempt for our profession.”
They have also warned in the note that there is an increase in the deterioration of mental and physical health, absenteeism from work or even abandonment of the profession.
The system requires “a profound restructuring”, since it is “ineffective and is exceeding all limits, endangering professionals and citizens”, they have argued.
“We are tired of being the cheap and qualified labor force of the system, of pats on the back, of applause and empty recognition”, so they have decided to “say enough” and have called a strike.
