According to the U.S., it has intelligence that Russian commanders received orders to invade. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has agreed to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit. This is provided that Russia has not invaded Ukraine. On Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated to Face the Nation that the U.S. believes Russia is “moving ahead” with plans for invasion, despite denials by Moscow .
Monday’s “CBS Mornings” interview featured Sullivan saying that Mr. Biden had made it clear throughout the crisis that the United States (and its allies) are open to any solution. We are ready to continue diplomacy at all levels to try and resolve this matter peacefully. We are ready and as united as the West to impose swift and severe sanctions on Russia if it chooses to move ahead.
“Yesterday, President Biden received a briefing about the details and final plans for the consequences of Russia’s move in the coming days or hours.”
Sullivan stated that Washington was proactive in not only moving thousands of U.S. soldiers to Poland, Romania, and other parts Europe to defend NATO territory against Russian aggression but also in warning the international community about Russia’s intentions. This included efforts to create a crisis in Ukraine in order to give the appearance of an invasion. “That’s exactly the thing that happened over the weekend,” Sullivan stated, referring to the escalation in shelling of civilians and military personnel from the east.
“What we did was indicate to the world this isn’t something Russia has been provoked into; it is a brutal war that Russia will be committing on its neighbor,” Sullivan stated. “And that will allow us, if Russia does move forward, not only to rally the West but also the world to hold Russia responsible for its actions.”
Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings”, asked: “Can you help Americans understand…why should we pay attention to this, and why does it matter to us?”
He replied, “We’ve seen how small wars in Europe can grow if you don’t stand up for our allies and partners in strong and determined terms.” “That’s why President Biden sent troops to NATO territory, not to fight Russia in Ukraine but to defend NATO. This has kept the peace in Europe for seven decades and prevented a major power conflict between the U.S. & Russia.
“I believe it matters. It’s the fundamental value of freedom to choose and freedom of destiny for everyone everywhere. This is a deep American trait, which is why we support the Ukrainian people during this time.”
