Cancellations due to security strike at German airports

The all-day strike was called by the ver.di union at Frankfurt, Germany’s busiest airport. It also included Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg as well as Stuttgart, Duesseldorf, Cologne-Bonn, Hannover, Stuttgart, Hannover, Stuttgart and Hannover. This strike followed walkouts in several airports last weekend.

German news agency dpa reported that 108 of the 790 flights scheduled for Tuesday morning had been cancelled at Frankfurt. Passengers who were due to depart at the airport could not board. However, passengers could transfer flights.

All 88 scheduled departures from Hamburg were cancelled.

Federal police supervise security checks at German airports, but they are largely carried out by private companies. Bavaria’s security personnel are paid according to a contract for public employees. They are not striking.
