As Ukrainians rushed to flee from an alleged Russian invasion, the number was increasing rapidly.
Poland declared its borders open for fleeing Ukrainians even for those without official documents.
A government official said on Saturday that the country had sent a train to pick up wounded soldiers from the war in Mostyska in western Ukraine and transport them to Warsaw.
The train was able to depart Przemysl, a border town. It has five carriages that can transport the injured and four that can be used for humanitarian aid in Lviv.
According to reports, some Ukrainian men were also reported to be returning from Poland to fight the Russian forces.
These were however exceptions to what was primarily a exodus of Ukrainians.
As of right now, almost 116,000 people have crossed international borders. It could go higher, it’s changing every second,” Shabia Mantoo spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commission for Refugees. It’s fluid and constantly changing.
If the situation worsens, an estimated 4 million Ukrainians may flee.
After the decision of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s President, to ban military-age men from leaving the country on Thursday, the majority of those who arrived were women, children, and the elderly.
Mantoo stated that most of them were headed to Poland, Moldova and Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovakia. Some even went into Belarus, where some Russian forces entered Ukraine.
Although she did not have any details about numbers by country, the majority of Ukrainians arrived in Poland. There, some 2 million Ukrainians have settled in Poland in recent years after being driven from Ukraine by Russia’s 2014 invasions and looking for work opportunities in the growing economy of their European Union neighbour.
According to the Polish government, more than 100,000 Ukrainians have crossed the border between Ukraine and Poland in the last 48 hours.
According to Polish broadcaster TVN24, the Medyka border crossing was filled with vehicles that were waiting to enter Poland. The line stretched for 15 kilometers (9 miles) and crossed into Ukraine.
