YouTube Testing New AI Feature for Shorts Videos

YouTube is currently experimenting with a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature called Dream Screen for its Shorts format. This feature will allow users to add custom green screen images generated by AI to their one-minute vertical videos. The purpose of this feature is to provide users with creative backgrounds that help their videos stand out or align thematically with the video content. Currently, Dream Screen is only available to a select group of Shorts creators as part of an experiment by the video streaming platform.

The new feature was announced on YouTube’s support page, where they described Dream Screen as a tool that uses AI to create image green screen backgrounds for Shorts videos. Once users have access to Dream Screen, they can input a text prompt describing the background they want, and the AI will generate it instantly. For example, users can request backgrounds like a “fancy hotel pool on a tropical island” which will be added to the video once generated.

However, there are still some unanswered questions about Dream Screen. It is unclear whether the background needs to be added during recording or if it can be applied to pre-recorded videos. Additionally, the necessity of a real green screen for the effect to work is unknown, or if it can be digitally added like in Google Meet. The company has not specified any restrictions on generating AI images, but more details may be provided on the Dream Screen feature page.

As an experimental feature, Dream Screen is currently limited to a small group of creators, with plans to expand access to more users in 2023. Alongside this feature, YouTube has also made its Playables feature available to all users, offering access to over 75 free-to-play games that were previously exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
