Winter Weather Preparedness Week: Promoting Safety in Missouri

news-04112024-183424

Cold, slippery winter weather is on its way, and it’s important to be prepared. The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service are teaming up to promote Winter Weather Preparedness Week. The goal is to help people plan ahead and prioritize safety.

Throughout the week, state officials will focus on different aspects of winter weather preparedness. This includes understanding winter weather terminology, staying safe on icy surfaces, knowing how to handle snowstorms, staying warm in extreme cold, and making plans for snow, ice, and cold weather.

It’s crucial to be ready for winter weather, as low temperatures can be dangerous. In 2023, 37 people in Missouri died from exposure to the cold. Additionally, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported over 2,800 crashes during snowy, icy, or hail conditions last year, resulting in nearly 1200 injuries and 22 deaths.

To stay safe during the winter months, families should create an emergency plan and put together an emergency kit. The kit should include essentials like bottled water, non-perishable foods, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries. It’s also important to have a vehicle winter emergency kit with items such as a blanket, snacks, jumper cables, and flares. Remember to avoid driving in dangerous conditions if possible.

Check that alternate heat and power sources like fireplaces, wood stoves, kerosene heaters, and generators are working correctly. And always use space heaters with caution, as they can be hazardous if used improperly. By following these tips and being prepared, you can stay safe and comfortable during the winter season.
