Transitioning Roles: SLPS Interim Superintendent’s Focus on Students

ST. LOUIS – Dr. Milicent Borishade, the Interim Superintendent of St. Louis Public School, is taking charge after Dr. Keisha Scarlett’s departure in September. In an exclusive live interview with FOX 2’s Kalista Mitrisin, Dr. Borishade discussed the current climate at SLPS and her determination to put the focus back on the students.

Steering the System Back on Track

Since assuming the role of Interim Superintendent, Dr. Borishade has been working diligently to rescue a failing system. With nine leadership vacancies to address, including the recent departures of the transportation and security directors, the district is undergoing significant changes under her leadership.

Empowering Students Through Literacy

Despite the challenges faced by SLPS, Dr. Borishade remains committed to prioritizing the needs of the students. This commitment is evident in the upcoming ‘Literacy for the Lou’ event, scheduled to take place at the Missouri History Museum on Saturday, Dec. 7. Last year, the event drew over 4,000 attendees, and this year, SLPS anticipates an even larger turnout.

Parent Perspectives on SLPS

Parents, like LaKesha Dean, are closely monitoring the changes within the school district since Dr. Scarlett’s departure. Dean, a parent of students in both SLPS and a charter school, expressed her admiration for the dedication of SLPS staff amidst the ongoing transitions. She hopes for a new leader who will prioritize the community and teachers’ needs, echoing the sentiments of many parents in the district.

Special Guest at ‘Literacy for the Lou’

To further empower students through literacy, SLPS has invited Malcolm Mitchell, NFL Super Bowl Champion and children’s author, to share his unique story at this year’s event. Dr. Borishade encourages everyone in the district to attend and take advantage of the free services offered, emphasizing the importance of education and community engagement.

As the district navigates these changes, Dr. Borishade’s unwavering commitment to the students and the community shines through, setting a positive tone for the future of SLPS.
