No big technology company opted for artificial intelligence as soon as Google. Years ago, Google achieved things like its voice assistant recognizing the voice better than a human. Something that is largely due to deep learning. Machines that learn with the enormous amount of data that the company handles.
But with ChatGPT, part of that prestige that Google had earned has been called into question. Bard, his answer to ChatGPT, hasn’t evolved as fast as Open AI’s artificial intelligence.
At the Google I/O 2023 developer conference, the company has shown what Bard is capable of achieving if combined with its browser. The product by which Google managed to be one of the most important technology companies in the world. This year marks the 25th anniversary of its creation.
Let’s start talking about Bard. We have had the opportunity to test it, although Spain is not among the countries from which it can be accessed. What convinces us the most is that unlike ChatGPT, Bard’s data is up-to-date, as it is largely based on data collected from the Internet.
For Bard to evolve, Google has presented PaLM 2, the second version of the language with which this artificial intelligence is trained. In this new version, in fact, its abilities to learn languages other than English have been improved. Something that is essential for Google to have more presence in the sector.
Bard already has a significant advantage. Despite being in a lower stage of development than ChatGPT, it is much better at processing information after 2021. Which is as far as the data with which ChatGPT operates. And this Bard achieves thanks to the close relationship it has with the Google search engine.
The new Google search system is based on Bard and Bard is also connected to the search engine. That may be its main advantage over its most direct competitor: Bing. Although the Microsoft search engine integrates a small module with ChatGPT, it is only possible to ask questions that do not require very long answers.
The main novelty of the new Google search engine is that it is no longer based so much on keywords as on questions. Although you can continue using it as we do now. After all, searching for keywords can be more effective, and faster, than asking certain questions.
We will also find more images in the searches we do. With this, Google seems to want to counter the growing trend among many young people to search for doubts on TikTok or Instagram.
In fact, in the video that Google released yesterday, it was perfectly clear how some searches referred to short YouTube videos, similar to TikTok videos.
Bard, for his part, will appear in searches answering questions like ChatGPT does today, although references to the web pages from which part of the information comes will be important.
Can this maneuver end up causing fewer visits to web pages? It could happen. If Bard is able to give us the information instead of accessing a website, the incentive to create many pages would be lost. Something that would change the Internet as we know it today.
Although first it would be necessary to see how Google manages to adapt the advertising system that it currently uses. What we already know is that Google Shopping, the system for searching for products for sale on the Internet, has been boosted with artificial intelligence. After all, all this pretends to be a big business.
