Sunrise, Florida recently hosted the Broward County sports hall of fame ceremony, a special event that celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of sports. The ceremony, which was emceed by Josh Moser from 7News, honored athletes, coaches, and sports pioneers who either currently reside in Broward County or have in the past.

One of the distinguished inductees at the ceremony was Steve Shapiro, a former colleague of 7News who dedicated over thirty years to reporting on athletes ranging from high school to professional levels in South Florida. In an interview with 7News’ Donovan Campbell, Steve expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, “I’m really touched by this. I mean, any time that you’re attached to the same list as Dan Marino, or Chris Evert, or Rocky Marciano, you know it’s a big deal. And I know that I’m getting to the end of my life’s achievements, so this is going to be it. So I’m really, really happy about this, and happy that you and a lot of other people are here to celebrate with me.”

In addition to Steve Shapiro, this year’s hall of fame class included Diana Nyad, an endurance swimmer renowned for being the first person to swim from Cuba to Key West. The Broward County Sports Hall of Fame has a history of inducting famous and successful athletes, including Dolphins Hall of Famer Jason Taylor.

The event was a night filled with celebration and recognition for individuals who have left an indelible mark on the world of sports. The Broward County sports hall of fame continues to honor those who have excelled in their respective fields, inspiring future generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
