Spotify joins the artificial intelligence (AI) craze. The streaming platform has announced the launch of DJ, a functionality that recommends and comments on some relevant or curious information about the songs, according to the tastes of the users and the songs they have previously listened to in the player.
“You’ll be checking out the latest music and looking back at some of your old favorites, maybe even resurfacing that song you haven’t heard for years. It will then review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs curated just for you. And what’s more, it constantly updates the lineup based on your feedback,” the company explains in a statement.
Spotify supports the change in a greater personalization of the experience. In this sense, remember other discovery features such as Discover Weekly or the annual Wrapped campaign, which collects all the most listened to songs in recent months. And he describes it as a “personalized AI guide”
This feature is currently only available in beta and “will offer a curated selection of music along with commentary on the tracks and artists we think you’ll like in amazingly realistic voice acting.”
As explained by the platform, the user will always have the option to change the song. You only have to touch the DJ button. “The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don’t like!), the better his recommendations will be. Think of it as the best of Spotify customization, but like an artificial intelligence DJ in your pocket.
Spotify has used a generative AI from OpenAI, also behind the well-known chatbot ChatGPT. It also uses a proprietary voice generator model developed thanks to its acquisition of Sonantic, which comments on the songs it proposes and details why it does so. For example, if he clicks on a song that the user listened to frequently at one point in his life, the DJ reminds him that this was his soundtrack that year.
The voice that reproduces these messages is that of the head of Cultural Associations, Xavier “X” Jernigan. Previously, X was one of the hosts of Spotify’s first (and personalized) morning show, The Get Up. “Her personality and voice resonated with our listeners and resulted in a loyal following for the podcast,” ends the platform, which promises new voices and innovations in the coming dates.
